Times Square, so named after the one-time head office of The New York Times. Located in the region of Manhattan, New York City, which centres on 42nd Street and Broadway. It forms the western portion of the business area of Midtown Manhattan, New York.
The paper's operating facilities were moved by Adolph S. Ochs, New York Times publisher, to a different tower on 42nd Street in the middle of the region known as Longacre Square. Ochs persuaded Mayor George B. McClellan Jr to develop a subway stop at the site and named it Times Square. Officiated by Mayor McClellan, the location was officially named Times Square on April 8, 1904.
In the course of 1913, the paper moved away from the tower but remained in the neighbourhood. One Times Square tower, earlier known as the Allied Chemical Building, is the setting of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop that replaced the fireworks display of 1904 to 1906. It had been December 31, 1907 when the ball, signifying New Year's Day was initially dropped at Times Square and from that time the Square has been the site of the principal New Year's celebration in New York City. A minute of silence, and after that a recording of church bells pealing, took the place of the ball drop on account of wartime blackout restrictions during World War II.
The millennium celebration in New York on December 31, 1999 is considered as the largest assembling in Times Square since August 1945. Celebrations marking the end of World War II provided reports of approximately two million individuals within Times Square.
Times Square quickly developed as a cultural centre including theatres, music halls and luxurious hotels. Nevertheless, the 1930s and the start of the Great Depression shifted the tone downwards. Times Square became a district full of "peep shows", all-night motion picture houses, and retailers marketing cheap tourist commodities. It began to be considered a dangerous location.
Removal of 'red light' interests and improving security in the area, paved the way for the opening up of more tourist-friendly attractions. Such initiatives were encouraged by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in the mid-1990s. This restructuring began when the local authorities issued a sanction in opposition to the tight clustering of aforementioned businesses in the 42nd Street area. Several such shops closed or relocated to industrial areas in Brooklyn or Queens. These types of changes allowing for and encouraging more fashionable enterprises to move in.
Broadway's theatres and the numerous animated neon and television-like billboards have made it one among New York's symbolic images, contending with Las Vegas on the density of lighted signs.
In 1992, the Times Square Alliance, a partnership of businesses, began improving the quality of commerce and sanitation in the district. Currently, Times Square provides attractions such as a major TV studio for ABC, restaurants and a number of movie theatre complexes. It has become a destination for large financial, publishing, and media companies. A larger police visibility in Times Square has enhanced the safety. While the rejuvenated Times Square is unquestionably safer and more pleasant, a few criticise that the area has lost its spark and is now a perfectly clean, "Disneyfied" version of its previous self.
